How to rank higher in SERPs than Wikipedia pages

upqode | Jul 9th, 2019

Wikipedia consists of 26 million pages ranked on the first search page (at least half of them are TOP-3). Your website or online business, in one way or another, fought with them for search traffic. Although it’s almost impossible to compete with the Wikipedia reference profile, we can learn (and copy) their internal search engine optimization. In this article, you will learn what SEO services Wikipedia holds on and what should be implemented on your site.

At one time, Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird knocked out websites even with strong SEO. But Wikipedia has stood firmly with each update of Google ranking and continues to dominate the results of search results today. And it’s not just about links. Even counterparts, like eHow and WikiHow, with a lot of external strong links, have been noticeably affected.

Qualitative (well researched) SEO articles

Every text on your site should, better than competitors, answer user questions. This will lead to rank high in Google. What Wikipedia does is reveal topics from all possible angles. This is obtained by working on an article by a whole group of authors. Since you will not have such an advantage – high-quality text can be obtained through an in-depth analysis of the topic of each article.

Tip: do not rely on the experience of a copywriter in the study of the material before writing. Make a plan of the article and it will save you from misunderstanding, the lack of important blocks of content.

Strict source policy

If there are no reputable sources, do not create a page on the selected topic. Being a good author is only one half of the process of writing high-quality material. The second involves conducting proper research using reliable resources. Citing sources increases the confidence of visitors and improves the quality of the article to which search engines send traffic.

Volume of content

Based on Moz and BuzzSumo research, longer articles tend to get more links and reposts. Although the optimal length of the content varies depending on the complexity and type of the theme (key request), it is clear that volumetric content is what you should strive for (especially for informational keywords). It is important to understand that the point is not to write a large amount. The bottom line is that having completely opened a broad topic, you will not get less than 10,000 characters.

Does this mean that you need to write each article with more than 10,000 characters? No, it largely depends on the breadth of the topic and key requests. Some topics are just pointless to describe on such a volume.

Internal link building strategies

  • Analyze the length of content from competitors
  • Does the content of competitors reveal the theme from all sides
  • Are there internal links from authoritative pages of the site (centers of attention) to less authoritative ones?

As an SEO agency, we publish a lot of content with a length of fewer than 5000 characters, and it is ranked normally. But when working with competitive keywords, we verify that the content contains deep, well-developed material that has been well studied using reliable sources and can improve digital marketing for small businesses.

Individual Wikipedia pages contain hundreds or even thousands of links. If several pages have internal links to new pages, combined with high domain authority, the new page is almost guaranteed to get to the top. Embed internal linking inside articles. Review the site and link from old articles to new ones.

Correct alt tags of images and file names

In the articles from Wikipedia, photos are very often present. They have good descriptions, correct alt-tags, as well as file names. Using pictures to add LSI keywords is one of my favorite SEO strategies. Instead of using the same keyword for each alt tag and file name, add words related to your main keyword.

The natural style of writing

And last but not least, the natural language of the content. This is another reason why Wikipedia is in the lead. Their authors do not write for search engines. They write for readers. I’m pretty sure that most of them don’t even know what SEO is. And it helped Wikipedia in the long run.

Imagine if Wikipedia applied “SEO guidelines” in their editorial policy, and its authors followed the “best advice” outlined a few years ago about how to optimize articles. Ignoring SEO, they reinforce the dominance in search results with every Google update.

Become an expert in your field by preparing the content of exceptional quality and improve Google rankings. Following the above recommendations is really possible. Our SEO guide will lead to the fact that your content will be referred to as the source.

What They Say

This is a team that pays great attention to detail and does great work. I had a design done for my website by a separate designer, and Nick implemented the design perfectly for both mobile and desktop. His team uses project management software to track tasks and break up the work for his team into sprints. You aren’t just getting a developer when you hire Nick, you’re also getting great project management and organization. I 100% recommended it.
